The Murals at Targowa 15 Are Coming Back

The walls of the building at ul. Targowa 15 have been part of the visual history of Warsaw's Praga district since the 1970s. The tenement, listed as a historic monument and designed by the distinguished architect Juliusz Nagórski, is an important element of the historic architecture of this part of the city. It was here that the characteristic "Foton" and "Jubiler" murals could be admired for decades, becoming permanent fixtures of this part of the city's landscape. In 2019, the murals were painted over, sparking a discussion about their place in urban space and how works of this kind from the past should be treated.

Today, their condition is very far from their original form. The facades are damaged and covered with many layers of graffiti and random inscriptions. In addition, part of the composition has been obscured by construction elements that have appeared in recent years, meaning the original murals are now largely invisible. For this reason, Good Looking Studio has begun work aimed at bringing order to this space and restoring the legibility of these historic works.

The project is being carried out in agreement with the Warsaw Monument Conservator, the Porozumienie dla Pragi association and the building's owner — the residents' community at ul. Targowa 15.

One of the most important elements of the project will be the uncovering and restoration of the "Foton" mural, which for many years was one of the most recognisable landmarks of this part of Praga.

Space for new murals

The second wall at Targowa 15 will be dedicated to new mural projects. An artistic mural will be created there and displayed for approximately three months. It will then be replaced by subsequent projects - commercial murals with an artistic character, developed in collaboration with artists. As a result, the wall will function as a space for ever-changing mural concepts, combining artistic expression with visual communication in the urban environment. The project aims to strike a balance between respect for the history of this place and creating space for new mural projects in Warsaw. What will the new version of these iconic walls in Warsaw’s Praga district look like? We’ll be sharing updates on our social media channels, so make sure to follow us. One thing is certain - it’s going to be good.
