Aboutproject

BRIEF An artistic mural in the courtyard of a historic tenement building at 21 Chmielna Street in Warsaw, created for the “Jabłkowski Brothers Department Store” - one of the icons of pre-war commerce in the capital. The project was inspired by the early 20th-century postcard series “Warsaw in the Future”: futuristic visions of a metropolis filled with airships, elevated railways, and flying trams - concept by architect Piotr Glegoła; detailed design by Marcin Gliwicki. We have been collaborating with the Jabłkowski Brothers Department Store since 2018. CHALLENGE The courtyard of the tenement building is a closed, intimate space with limited perspective. Instead of fighting these conditions, we used them to our advantage. The wall became an element of the composition, and the courtyard’s architecture - part of the illusion. The result is a trompe-l’œil that momentarily distorts one’s sense of reality: a red tram from the historic “Jabłkowski Brothers” line hovers several meters above the ground and appears to be flying through the building’s wall. EFFECT One of the most talked-about mural unveilings in Warsaw in years. Since its unveiling, the mural has become one of the most photographed spots in the city center - hundreds of photos and posts have appeared on social media, and crowds gather beneath the building. People are coming from other cities to see it. As visitors say, the mural “makes an impression - you can’t tell what’s part of the building and what isn’t.”
